What I diagnose and treat

Gum disease and periodontal conditions

Periodontal disease, commonly called gum disease, is an infection of the gums and the bone that support your teeth. In its early stage (gingivitis) it is reversible; in its advanced stage (periodontitis) it destroys the bone and is a leading cause of tooth loss.

If your gums bleed, feel tender, or seem to be pulling away from your teeth, you may have periodontal (gum) disease. It usually develops without pain, so an early diagnosis is the best way to protect your teeth and the bone that supports them.

Signs you shouldn’t ignore

  • Gums that bleed when you brush or floss
  • Swollen, red or tender gums
  • Gums pulling away from the teeth (recession)
  • Persistent bad breath that does not go away
  • Teeth that feel loose or have started to shift
  • Longer-looking teeth or new sensitivity

Why it matters

Gum disease is one of the most common causes of tooth loss in adults, and it rarely hurts in its early stages. According to the WHO, severe periodontal disease affects more than 1 billion people worldwide, and CDC data shows that nearly half of U.S. adults aged 30 and over have some form of periodontitis. By the time a tooth feels loose, you may have already lost bone. A professional evaluation, even from a distance with photos, is the most reliable way to know what’s happening while your teeth can still be saved.

Periodontitis: advanced gum disease
Periodontitis — advanced gum disease that destroys the bone around the teeth

Periodontitis

Periodontitis is the advanced stage of gum disease. The infection destroys the bone and ligament that hold your teeth in place, and it can progress silently for years. I can’t cure it, but I can stop it with specialized treatment and regular maintenance to protect your teeth and bone.

Gum recession
Gum recession — the gum pulls back and exposes the root of the tooth

Receding gums

When the gum moves back, it exposes the root of the tooth. This can cause sensitivity, increase the risk of decay and make your smile look uneven. I treat recession, and in selected cases I can rebuild the lost gum tissue with a graft to protect the root and improve the appearance.

Peri-implantitis: around dental implants
Peri-implantitis — infection of the tissue and bone around a dental implant

Peri-implantitis

Peri-implantitis is an infection of the tissue and bone around a dental implant. Treated early, I can often save the implant; left untreated, it can loosen or fail. I diagnose and treat peri-implantitis myself, and I coordinate the long-term maintenance of your implants.

Periodontal treatments

How a periodontist in Bogotá treats gum disease

Your plan is built around your diagnosis, never around a standard package. These are the treatments I perform most often.

Laser therapy

I use a dental laser to remove damaged tissue, reduce bacteria in periodontal pockets, and reshape the gum line — often without a scalpel or stitches.

  • Less pain and bleeding
  • No scalpel or stitches in many cases
  • Faster, more comfortable healing

Scaling and root planing

The standard non-surgical treatment for periodontitis: I clean the tooth roots below the gum line to remove plaque and tartar, so your gums can heal and reattach.

  • Deep cleaning below the gum line
  • Usually one or two appointments
  • The first step in most treatment plans

Gum grafting

When gums have receded, I use a small graft to rebuild the lost tissue, reduce sensitivity and protect the exposed root of the tooth.

  • Covers exposed roots
  • Reduces tooth sensitivity
  • Restores a more even gum line

Gum contouring

For an uneven gum line or a «gummy» smile, I reshape the gum, often with a dental laser and without stitches, for a more harmonious smile.

  • Aesthetic gum reshaping
  • Often bladeless with laser
  • Natural-looking results

Implant and peri-implant care

I maintain and treat the tissue around your dental implants, including managing peri-implantitis (infection around an implant).

  • Implant maintenance
  • Early treatment of infection
  • Helps save the implant

Minimally invasive laser dentistry

Treatment with a dental laser is gentler on your gums. In many cases there’s no scalpel and no stitches, with less bleeding, less discomfort and a faster recovery — a good fit if you feel anxious about dental treatment.

Laser vs. traditional

How laser treatment compares

Not every case is treated the same way, but here’s the general difference my patients notice between laser treatment and conventional gum surgery.

Frequently asked questions

Your questions, answered

Everything international patients ask me most often before booking.

What is a periodontist?
A periodontist is a dentist who specializes in the gums and the bone that supports the teeth. I diagnose and treat gum disease, gum recession and problems around dental implants, as a periodontist and oral implantologist based in Bogotá, Colombia.
How do I know if I need periodontal treatment?
Common signs include gums that bleed when you brush, swollen or tender gums, persistent bad breath, receding gums and teeth that feel loose. Gum disease often progresses without pain, so a professional evaluation is the only reliable way to know. In a virtual consultation, I can review your symptoms and photos and recommend the next step.
Is periodontal treatment painful?
Most periodontal treatments are performed under local anesthesia and are well tolerated. I also treat many cases with a dental laser, which often means no scalpel and no stitches, with less bleeding and faster healing. You’ll receive clear aftercare instructions for a comfortable recovery.
Can laser treatment help my case?
A dental laser can help with many periodontal procedures: reducing bacteria in periodontal pockets, reshaping the gum line and treating the tissue around implants. It is minimally invasive and often means less bleeding and a faster recovery. Not every case is suitable for laser treatment, so I’ll tell you honestly whether it’s right for you.
How long does treatment take, and how long should I stay in Bogotá?
Treatment length depends on your diagnosis. Non-surgical treatment (scaling and root planing) can often be completed in one or two appointments, while surgical or regenerative cases may need more time. In your virtual consultation, you’ll get a realistic treatment schedule and an estimate of how many days to plan for your trip.
Can gum disease be cured?
Gingivitis (early gum disease) is reversible with treatment and good oral hygiene. Periodontitis is a chronic condition: it cannot be fully cured, but it can be controlled and stopped from progressing, which is why specialized treatment and regular maintenance are so important, to keep your teeth and bone.
How much does treatment cost?
Every case is different, so treatment is quoted after an evaluation. You will receive a personalized, itemized plan with clear costs before you commit to anything, and no hidden fees.
Do you treat international patients?
Yes. I see international patients and I’ll make sure your diagnosis and treatment plan are clear before you travel. We can start with a virtual consultation.
Can I have a virtual consultation before traveling?
Yes. A virtual consultation is the recommended first step: you share your dental history, photos and a short description of your concerns, and I review your case and outline your possible treatment before you book flights.
